Here's a better special fx picture I created. In the book, the Discovery actually went to Saturn. But, for the movie they sent it to Jupiter, because they felt that recreating saturn with it's rings would be too difficult for the big screen. Hence, I put Discovery in orbit around Jupiter. this special fx photo was done for me by Mr. David M Harland, who has written several books on space exploration. Here he has Discovery near Saturn as it was in the book. This will probably be my last picture posting for this contest. Attachments:

I may have said this elsewhere on the board, but I'd like to send a great big Thank You to Herb and the good people at ModelMakerZ for selecting my Discovery rendering for the First Place award in this contest. I am honored and delighted to accept it. I have added a page to my web site to mark the occasion: www.myspacemuseum.com/2001discovery.htm with Thank You's and links to everyone involved, and I'm in the process of writing a review of the kit for the Starship Modeler web site, which is the only place one can actually buy it. I'm taking a short hiatus from model building to catch up on some writing projects and take care of the seeming limitless details associated with the rebuilding of my house, but you haven't seen the last of me! I hope you all have a great Christmas and a very Happy New Year! <Signed> Karl D Dodenhoff, RN December 4, 2010

Congratulations ,Karl ! Very nice work! I have been intrigued by this kit since I first saw an ad for it on the web. Great to see it go together. You did the ship right. I like it. Now all you need is some sound bites from the HAL 9000 computer for the display. Also appropriate while awaiting the final launch of the Space Shuttle Discovery. Howard
BTW- I here you about the home renovation. That can be a full time hobby in itself LOL.

Thanks, Howard! Looks like the Shuttle isn't leaving the ground any time soon. There's another Discovery kit out there that's nearly 5 feet long, which I may well buy some day, but that will wait. I'm taking a hiatus from model building for a while as this home rebuilding is really taking up all my time & energy. Plus, I'm working on some writing that's been needing to get done, like for my web site and another project. But, I'll be back!!!

I'd like to add a remark here about the pigment powders from Model Makerz that I got as part of the prize for the first on-line build. The one called "European Dirt" is an AMAZING likeness for Martian soil!! I used it for this EVA Models figure and I was truly flabbergasted at how great it came out! Attachments:
